Thought
My
master use to say, "When the heavy rains come, the earth will tell
you when there has been enough rain. And when the earth tells you this,
you must take hot, burning coals and toss them up into the air."
But when I sat in the silent gloomy woods by a small fire and the heavy
rains began, a man appeared. In his hand there was a green stick that
he warmed in my small fire. He then made motions with the stick, as
if striking at the night sky, and the rains stopped.

Meditation
is a specific technique for resting the mind and attaining a state
of consciousness that is totally different from the normal waking
state. In meditation, you are fully awake and alert, but your mind
is not focused on the external world or the events taking place around
you. Neither is your mind asleep, dreaming, or fantasizing. Instead,
it is clear, relaxed, and inwardly focused.
